Now Wednesday, l had anchored Elektra in the Precuil River just before dark on Saturday night. As nice as it is in the Precuil River, l really wanted to go sailing again and on Wednesday the forecast was for a steady northerly force 4. My plan when ready was to sail east from St Mawes for 10nm or so, then turn west and head back to Gillan Harbour. I needed to be home for a nurse appointment on Friday and there didn’t look like there was any wind on Thursday.
I pulled up Elektra’s anchor at 1000hrs, cleaned and stowed it inside the anchor locker because I would nood the bow roller for Elektra’s swing mooring strop once I got back to Gillan Harbour. Once done I motored Elektra back out down the Precuil River to St Mawes where I set her genoa and headed south towards St Anthony point, turning her slowly around the point and on past Zone Point, trying to stay well south to avoid losing the wind. Now sailing east there were about 20 other yachts in front heading for the Dodman Point. With what seemed little or no wind, Elektra was sailing very slowly and my idea of a good sail today was starting to disappear. I could have pulled the mainsail up but lately, if the mainsail is needed we always end up motoring instead! So just 2nm into the easterly direction, I decided to turn her around and head for Gillan. From here across Falmouth Bay the wind was up and down in strength, anywhere between force 2-4, but some realy nice sailing at times.
I picked up the mooring the first time in the unsettled harbour at 1215hrs having logged 8.5nm, where the wind seemed to be northeast? It was northerly in Falmouth Bay? I packed up and lowered the dinghy from the davits and fitted the motor, and by 1300hrs was ashore at St Anthony in Meneage. I loaded the car and drove home.
